In the process of using LED, there are mainly two heat dissipation methods: passive heat dissipation and active heat dissipation.


Passive cooling

Generally, the cooling method adopted by LED is passive cooling. Passive cooling refers to the installation of a heat sink on the LED, and does not require a cooling fan.

For LED lamps, if the power of the lamp is small, the cooling requirement can be met by natural convection. If the lamp uses a single high-power LED, as long as the lamp selects a suitable packaging structure and designs a suitable heat sink structure, the cooling effect can also be achieved by natural convection.

For example, the fin cooling method is a cooling method of passive cooling. Its principle is to process aluminum alloy materials into fins to maximize the contact area between air and radiator, so as to increase the effect of natural convection.


Active cooling

High-power LED lighting sources often use active cooling, such as street lamps. When there are too many chips inside the LED lamp or the power is very high, passive cooling cannot meet the requirements, so active cooling measures are needed to speed up the heat exchange between the LED lighting source and the outside world.

A relatively simple and direct active cooling method is to install a fan on the LED light source. Active heat dissipation methods also include water cooling technology, microchannel radiators and other means. You can choose the appropriate heat dissipation method in combination with different working environments.
